PREFACE

This is the first of two books that aim to provide the student who has completed an Intermediate or Junior Certificate course in French with a graded treatment of the main aspects of senior work. They contain vocabulary, translation from French, prose translation, verb drill, grammar and questionnaire.

The book has been divided into thirty units which have been carefully graded. We have made the transition to senior work gradual. Thus the early units revise and give practice in the principal points of the junior course. The average class should be able to cover ten units of work each term.

The grammar notes deal with the main aspects of French grammar and are presented as a basis for the grammar lessons. The harder grammar topics have been kept until the third term and the discussion of the subjunctive mood in Unit 26 is restricted to its use after certain common conjunctions. Other common uses of the subjunctive are treated in “Senior French-Part II”.

Each of the proses has been composed to give drill on a particular point and practice is provided by the drill sentences and prose preparation. A questionnaire set appears in every second unit. This arrangement will permit the teacher to treat adequately other aspects of oral work.

At the back of the book are ten proses of examination type for those students who- are looking for additional practice in translation from English, together with ten dictées set at Leaving Certificate examinations.

We hope sincerely that this book will facilitate 􀂙d enliven the learning of French for students and will provide a sound grounding for those preparing for Leaving Certificate and Matriculation examinations
