Description

German Course Part 1 Horan & Slinn: Textbook – ©2020 – 2025

NB: Available NOW in these formats – Kindle eBook and Print on demand Paperback & HardCover.

This is the first part of a German course based upon an oral-aural approach. From the very beginning dialogues make possible the active use of the language. This approach is carried through into Parts 2 and 3.

The situations presented are basically those of a Munich family, with whom the learner can easily identify. The material of each lesson is developed step by step. A variety of exercises afford practice in speaking, writing, reading, and understanding the spoken word. The approach is workable with pupils of all abilities. The modern text and the rich illustrations present a lively picture of the country and the people.

The course is readily adaptable for the language laboratory and each lesson provides for both individual and class use. Some traditional songs are included, and we wish to thank Mr E. Wilson for his preparation of them. The appendix contains summaries of the grammatical material, which will be found useful for reference purposes.

We are indebted to Miss I. Gugger, Mrs I. Leake and Miss M. Springorum of the German staff of Fort Street High School for their many valuable comments and practical suggestions and to Mr E. Garan, Language Master, for his help in checking the manuscript. We are most grateful for the generous co-operation of officers of the German government in Sydney. The classroom contributions of students at Colyton and Fort Street High Schools and the enthusiasm of teachers piloting the course in other schools have been of great encouragement. We hope that, as in the pilot schools, the book will provide pleasure for many in the learning of German.
