Book V of “A New French Course” is the final book in a course of French based on an aural-oral approach.
There are twenty lessons and the arrangement of the material within each lesson is similar to that of Part IV.
Thus, each of the lessons contains:
- A reading passage
- A grammar topic (with drill exercises)
- Verb drill – regular and irregular
- A pronunciation exercise A vocabulary topic
- A prose
- A set of revision exercises.
Each of the odd numbered lessons contains: A dialogue
- A set of questionnaire exercises
- A composition exercise.
Each of the even numbered lessons contains:
- A comprehension passage.
- A dictation.
Once more, we would point out that it is not essential to do every exercise in order to complete a lesson satisfactorily. The material provided will enable the teacher to vary his approach according to the nature of his class. Furthermore, students not aiming at a high-level pass in French may prefer to omit some of the later lessons in the book which contain more difficult material and advanced topics of grammar. Revision sets in each lesson provide a series of systematic exercises to consolidate the basic grammar of the language.
At the back of the book are to be found additional proses, dictations and passages for translation, as well as a comprehensive set of appendices summarising basic points of grammar. The vocabulary of the book brings together all the words introduced in the five books of the course and thus provides the student with virtually a small dictionary of basic French words. Included in the book are ail the words of the Français fondamental with the exception of certain cognates.
Some comprehension passages, proses, and dictations used in the text are taken from Department of Education examination papers, and are published with permission. Copyright for this material is vested in Her Majesty.
We owe a special debt of gratitude to Madame V. Sauran of the University of N.S.W. who wrote a number of the dialogues used in the book. We are also indebted to Monsieur D. Vever, Director of Studies at the Alliance Française, for checking some sections of the text. We also wish to thank
Mr B. Banfield and Mr A. Tucker of Fort Street Boys ‘ High School for valuable suggestions and assistance given in the preparation of the book.
We are hopeful that this book will provide French students in the final year of their secondary course with material that will both interest and challenge them , no matter what their level of study.
