Those familiar with earlier editions of Part 3 of “A New French Course” will realise that this edition is different in two principal ways. Firstly, the size of the book has been reduced from twenty lessons to fifteen. The reduction in content will now enable an average class to complete the book in one year. The more advanced material which has been dispensed with is presented in Part 4. Secondly, whilst nearly all the sets of exercises have been retained, some have been shortened to allow more rapid treatment of the lessons and 10 provide space for new enrichment material (photographs and drawings) which, we hope, the student will find stimulating and informative. Whilst therefore the book has been ‘updated’, it retains all the main features of previous editions.

In respect to the vocabulary, every word in the official basic list drawn up by the Commission du Français élémentaire is introduced in this book. A sound practical basis for wide reading in French is thus afforded.

The lessons contain reading passages, vocabulary, phrase lists. sets of questions on the passages, grammar exposition, driU exercises, dictees, verb practice, simple dialogues, controlled compositions, pronunciation exercises, revision sets, songs and poems. Tn general. for ease of reference, the material of the lessons is presented i.Ji a fixed order. However, it is not intended that the exercises should be done strictly in their order of appearance in the lesson. Many of the exercises are designed for rapid oral drill. Once the material is drilled tn a variety of forms. a written exercise should be used principally as a check. The basic language patterns, introduced in Parts I and II, are constantly revised in the revision exercises. A comprehensive set of appendices provides the student with a valuable reference and the vocabulary in the back embraces every word presented in the three books.

lt is stressed that oral techniques should form a large part of each lesson. Opportunity is given in this book for frequent aural-oral practice and it is trusted that French wiJI be used as much as possible in the conduct of every lesson in order that the study of the language will be a living experience.

We would like to thank Monsieur M. Chicoteau, Senior Lecturer in rrench in the University of Queensland, and Dr E. Goldstein, for their valuable comments un the text of the book.
